 About

Heather offers in-person, home-visit and zoom lessons for children and young adults, aged 3 - 16 on the Westside of LA. These sessions are usually one-on-one or in small groups, which enables her to monitor each child's creative development in detail. Heather guides each student through the life cycle of a project, from free form experimentation through development and revision to final result. She places a dual emphasis on the artist's identity as a creative individual and the technical skills that will help them realize that identity. Classes include, but are not limited to: Drawing, painting (oil/watercolor/acrylic), illustration, crafting, sculpting, clay, soapstone, jewelry, puppetry, and needle-felting. Students are encouraged to introduce projects of their own design while using studio materials. Bring in ideas from home! We can make them. Immersion and curiosity in the art process is the goal: the final creation is a beautiful bonus.

Heather’s teaching philosophy emphasizes the development of the student’s identity as an artist. Her classes use active learning and structured dialogue--either one-on-one or in small groups-- to help each child shape their creative vision and hone their technical skills. Open-minded, creatively-focused conversation is key. Heather believes that while a powerful imagination cannot be taught, it can be, and often is, stifled. Her task is to excavate the child’s creative center as they navigate their own identity and sense of self in the world, ensuring that they have the technical skill and emotional acumen necessary to know their truth and express it visually to others.
